Promote healthy living

Efforts by K.C. Healthy Kids, The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition, LISC and others to promote healthy living was rewarded when the Kansas State Senate passed a Livable Streets Resolution Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Also called Complete Streets, Livable Streets are created to enable safe travel by all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation riders and drivers and people of all ages and abilities, including children, youth, families, older adults and individuals with disabilities.

The Senate declared its support for the policies of Resolution 1805 and will urge their adoption at the local, metropolitan, regional, state and national levels. The Senate said it will encourage and urge a number of organizations which build, control, maintain or fund roads, highways and bridges in Kansas to adopt Complete Streets policies and to plan, design, build and maintain their road and street system to provide complete, safe access to all road users.

Among the groups the Senate pointed to were the United States department of Transportation, the Kansas Department of Transportation, the governing bodies of Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Regional Planning Commissions, and municipalities.

With obesity levels rising every year and Kansas ranked as the 16th-most obese state in the nation with an adult rate of 29 percent and a rating of 18th in the country with a child obesity mark of 16 percent, building communities which promote active living will help combat these rates.

“It is not a coincidence that childhood obesity has increased while the physical environment around us has become singularly focused on moving cars,” KC Healthy Kids said in a letter to the Senate. “In our focus on moving cars, we have sacrificed what should be natural opportunities for children to move and play throughout the day.

“Children and teenagers should be able to safely walk to school or a friend’s house or bike to the park,” The letter added. “A young child should be able to pull his red wagon down a sidewalk in front of his house, but he can’t do that if there is no sidewalk.”

KC Healthy Kids also pointed out the need for safe places to cross streets for pedestrians and said that Complete Streets have been shown to reduce accidents and traffic jams as well.

If streets are designed properly they can encourage walking and bicycling, which improves the public health and reduces treatment costs for conditions associated with reduced physical activity, including obesity, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes.

Several governments in the state of already passed Complete Street policies including the cities of Leawood, Roeland Park, Lenexa, Topeka and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County.

The Drop Bar

Yup. You read it correctly. The Drop is offering a chance to win a bottle of Boulevard Chocolate Ale that you can win. Did we mention the winning thing?

When Boulevard Chocolate Ale was released several weeks ago, it broke our heart (mostly because we didn't get to drink any) to sell out of the entire case in the first two hours we offered it. One minute they were there, and they next they were gone. Very sad (again, for us).

However, after some creative horse-trading, Eddie managed to obtain a second full case of the coveted Chocolate Ale. (The batch number is 2011-5. We are aware of Boulevard's recent announcement regarding a few faulty batches. This is the good stuff) We know that many Kansas Citians have never had the opportunity to try the Ale, so The Drop staff conspired to find a creative way to make 12 bottles (potentially) available to the entire Drop fanbase. Here's what we cooked up:

From 6-8pm on Wednesday, February 29th and Wednesday, March 7th all participating guests will have an opportunity to win a bottle of Boulevard Chocolate Ale. How this will work is that from 6-8pm, for every $10 (per check) spent a raffle ticket will be dropped into a bowl. Happy Hour, a nice dinner, just drinks, Wednesday night Bachelorette party, birthdays... etc. It doesn't matter the reason to stop by. Essentially, you come to The Drop for a great Wednesday night out, and for every $10 spent, you earn an extra opportunity to win a bottle of Boulevard Chocolate Ale. (There is more than one bottle available to win each night) The drawing will be held at 8pm sharp, and winners must be present to claim their prize. Pretty neat and super-easy.

What Makes Happy Hour Happy

Restaurant and bar operators like "Happy Hours" because they fill up the establishment at times when it might otherwise be empty—typically late afternoon and early evening on weekdays. Consumers flock to happy hours, but why? If an operator eased back on drink specials, would they still come? How important is the food— and its price? Do consumers see happy hours primarily as occasions to save money in a restaurant or bar, or as a great way to hang out with friends and family?

When we* asked consumers about why they patronize happy hours, price considerations did turn up high on the list—46% said they were drawn by good prices on drinks, and almost as many (41%) said value-priced food was an allure. A quarter (26%) pointed out that happy hour is a lower-priced alternative to a dinner out at a restaurant— although almost as many (24%) said they appreciated the chance to stay on for a sitdown dinner rather than decamping to their homes or another restaurant.

Happy hours are about more than low-priced drinks. Many happy-hour patrons see these occasions as an easy way to relax (43%), to meet up with friends (38%) or to connect with their colleagues outside of the workplace (23%).

What about you? Which restaurant is your favorite?

Sushi House Leawood

Sushi House Leawood is managed by a talented couple and offers a nice dining experience. I was anxious to try their head chef Jin's favorite seasonal appetizer -"Grilled Black Cod with Miso" -  it was the last day on special so I hurried over. Shortly after sitting down the server brought a warm damp towel to cleanse my hands. The décor is sleek & comfortable. I ordered my cod and I wasn’t disappointed. Delicious! The chef said that he is now grilling the fish because it brings out more flavor, therefore the difference in the photo posted.  I am not sure if it was better now but I can assure you it was tender and it could served as an entrée.

What's for dinner tonight?

Hen House has different freshly prepared meals. I tried the Roast Turkey with potatoes & carrots. Not bad! I just added mustard, olive oil ,herbs, and spices on the potatoes & carrots – placed dish in oven for about 15 minutes – here they are!

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • green & red pepper cut
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups dry lentils
  • salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste

  1. In a large soup pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions, green & red pepper, and celery; cook and stir until onion is tender. Stir in garlic, bay leaf, oregano, and basil; cook for 2 minutes.
  2. Stir in lentils, and add water with glove onion. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer for at least 1 hour or less depending how you like the lentils. I like them dente!
  3. When ready to serve stir in with vegetables, and cook until it wilts. Stir in veal stock & red wine if you have some, and season to taste with salt and pepper, and more vine if desired.

Dinner at Home

Cheese Soufflé, Please!
Classic dish that my kids love! Easy to do, accompanied with a green salad that makes the perfect dinner on a winter night.

  1. Position rack in lower third of oven and preheat to 400 F
  2. Make the Béchamel sauce.
    • 5 tablespoons butter
    • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup milk
    • Pinch of ground nutmeg
    • In a medium saucepan, heat the butter over medium-low heat until melted. Add the flour and stir until smooth. Over medium heat add the milk, whisking continuously until very smooth. Remove from heat;
  3. 3 egg whites - using electric mixer, beat egg whites in another large bowl until stiff but not dry. Add some salt
  4. You need cheese - Gruyere or Parmesan!
  5. In the bechamel, add the yellow eggs, mix while gradually sprinkling in Gruyère cheese. Add gently the egg whites. Transfer batter to prepared dish. Place dish in oven and immediately reduce oven temperature to 375 F. Bake until soufflé is puffed and golden brown on top and center moves only slightly when dish is shaken gently, about 25 minutes (do not open oven door during first 20 minutes). Serve immediately.
  6. The result should look like that!
