Go Red for Women at RA

RA Sushi and Menorah Medical Center will help draw attention to heart disease during the month of February with a Go Red party and month-long fundraiser to benefit the local Kansas City chapter of the American Heart Association.

The Go Red party will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 and is open to the public. 

Guests are encouraged to wear red and enjoy complimentary appetizers. The event will help raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association in honor of its Go Red for Women movement. February is American Heart Month, drawing attention to heart disease, America's No. 1 killer, and the strides being taken through research and education to raise awareness of risk factors and to decrease death rates.

At the Go Red party and with a minimum $5 donation to Go Red for Women, guests will get a lesson in sushi making from one of our expert sushi chefs at a sushi rolling station. The best part is that guests can eat their work! Menorah Medical Center and retail locations at Park Place will offer giveaways and prizes.

On Feb. 1, RA will launch a specially-created Go Red sushi roll and cocktail. The two Go Red menu items will be available through Feb. 28 and $3 from the sale of each will benefit the local chapter of the American Heart Association.

RA Sushi’s own Red Heart Roll, which is only available through the end of February, sells for $12. The slightly spicy roll is a mixture of kani kama crab mix, cucumber & avocado rolled and topped with spicy tuna mix. The Red Dress Martini, which sells for $9, is an invigorating blend of pomegranate flavor, Absolut Citron vodka, Pama liqueur and fresh lemon and grapefruit juice.

Fun for Foodies by Chris

This blog isn’t exactly about eating, though it’s related.  Over the holidays I wanted to write about Pryde’s, the kitchenware (and more!) store in Westport that’s been there forever.   Well, for at least 46 years.  It’s locally owned and has been since John and Connie Perucca established it just down the street from where it is now.   The three story brick building is now owned and run by one of their daughters, Louise Meyers.

I’d originally wandered in there to find gifts for my book club.  After 32 years of Christmas gift-giving, sometimes it’s a little hard to find something new, fun, and different.  I did succeed.  In the process, I was reminded of all the wonderful items, and the variety of said items, they sell.  Then, just recently, I saw my nephew and his beautiful bride to be (at a great family celebration in Grand Street Café’s Board Room where we all had excellent meals) and so I asked Ginger where they were registered.  She said they hadn’t done that yet.  What, I exclaimed, you need to get moving.  Go to Pryde’s, they have everything I said.  She said, Ok, ok, whatever you say.  She’s pretty mellow; I like that in a bride to be who’s joining our family. 

So I was talking to Louise (full disclosure, she’s a fellow Dame in Les Dames d’Escoffier with me) and I asked her about their registry and what makes it different from say, one of the big boxier stores that also have registries.  And while I don’t want this to sound like a commercial, what she said really resonated with me, thinking back to when I didn’t have a clue.  She pointed out that the staff there are all seasoned cooks, and that they actually walk around with the bride/groom and make practical suggestions and recommendations.  For instance, everyone needs a 5 ½ quart Le Creuset round French oven, a 3 quart saucepan, a 10 inch chef’s knife, and a large jellyroll pan (for cookies or roast vegetables).  I had to agree with her, since I now cook and thus have a clue.  Pryde’s has mastered the personal touch from start to finish – including complimentary gift wrapping (no matter the price) and free delivery.  So, so nice.

Moving from new brides to me, me, me (and why else a blog?) and food, what I also really like there is the large variety of jarred foods and mixes, from spices to jams to salsas to fresh bread sometimes, too.  It’s all been taste-verified at one time or another.  And, of course, on Fridays/Saturdays I go downstairs to the Upper Crust bakery which offers cookies, bars, breads and scrumptious pies. I somehow missed  National Pie Day on January 12th, so I need to make up for that soon. 

Maybe I’ll do a full scale best-pie search, just to add a few needed pounds.  Ha!

Recipe chicken and waffles at The Marquee Café at the Hollywood Casino

Use small boneless chicken breasts
Season chicken breast with salt and pepper
Lightly dust chicken breast with flour
Mix a little hot sauce of your choice with some buttermilk
Place chicken breast in enough buttermilk to coat well
Finish breading process by dusting again with a seasoned flour mixture of garlic spice, salt, pepper and paprika
Carefully fry breaded chicken breast in hot 350 degree oil until golden brown. Chicken should reach internal temperature of 165 degrees for 15 seconds.

Secrets of Artisan Breads--Hands-On

Learn 3 of the artisan bread baker's secrets in this hands-on class. We'll start with a slow-rise, no-knead dough that we'll make in class. Slow-rise dough’s make a slightly tangy, sourdough-like bread with a honeycomb crumb. Then we'll see what a difference a cloche makes--a ceramic "bell" that fits over a round loaf as it bakes. The Surprises of Independence Square by Chris

I visited Independence Square over the holidays and what a delightful surprise!  I think the last time I was there was during Santa-Cali-Gon days about eight years ago but I have been in the neighborhood for Leila’s Hair Museum (truly one of the most interesting and bizarre museums around . . . but by the end, you almost want to own a piece of this by-gone art) or to eat at Ophelia’s.  But more about that place in a sec.

Anyway, back to Christmas – the old fashioned square was just lit up everywhere and the spirit of the season pervasive.  It’s always friendly there; at Christmas time it is practically effusive.  Too many of us overlook Independence other than the Truman connection, which is indeed worthwhile, from the Library to his home to even a walking trail. Independence also has lots of events going on all the time, places to see like museums and historic homes, major events almost all year long, a fun old-time drug store, bowling, too; but the Square is also a tiny little foodie mecca.

It includes everything from serve yourself yogurt to pizza to breakfast in a bakery to, especially, Ophelia’s.  One of my very first food articles was about Ophelia’s – back in 2000, when the restaurant had been open two years, taking over a space that once was a hardware store, then a Katz Drug Store, and then vacant for many years.  It was the first “real” restaurant (there are several now) on the Square and it was early in Independence Square’s resurgence. It’s still modern looking, still funky enough to catch your interest, and the food still great enough to reward your trip east. Ophelia’s menu is extensive, eclectic, and delicious – and even  less expensive than comparable restaurants in the “big city.”   For instance, chateaubriand is less than $30; two “lollipop” lamb ribs (an appetizer) are just $12; creative pork dishes start at $17; the list is extensive, from fish to meat to veggies only.  Oh, and good drinks, good wine. Next, I’m trying their Sunday brunch which I’m assuming will be just as terrific as their lunch and dinners.

One of my REAL resolutions for 2014 is to take more time for the people and places I love.  It doesn’t take much time to get to Independence – it’s a really worthwhile tiny trip which will end up surprising you!
