Peanches, a good experience

Peterman, the chef-owner of the new Peanches Food & Wine on 39th Street.(it's named for his late mother's pet pronunciation of peaches), is a dinner only bistro. The restaurant is located in a strip center, far from the 39th Street block restaurants, its window are painted in black to be rendered almost invisible.

Peanches is all about regional cuisine, employing ingredients from our area and wines. Pete puts his own creative spin on each dish, making them unique. The concept is a prix fixe menu: the menu offers a four-course meal ($32) with three optional supplements. Wine pairings are also available $16 a person for the four-course option.  All are prepared with Missouri ingredients, and Peterman has made several pairings with Missouri wines.

The Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association (GKCRA) is bringing together Kansas City restaurants and diners in a citywide effort to assist JJ’s Restaurant employees after a gas explosion destroyed the restaurant on Tuesday, February 19. For one day only – Saturday, February 23 – participating restaurants will donate 10 percent of sales to the JJ’s Restaurant Support Fund, a support account set up and managed by the GKCRA. The funds collected will be turned over to JJ’s Restaurant owner, Jimmy Frantze, and his management team to help his staff convalesce.

The absolute best way to cook asparagus, and SO SIMPLE! Season with olive oil, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese; bake at 400 for 8 minutes. / perfection.

Available year-round, spring is the best season for fresh asparagus.
  • Asparagus is a member of the Lily family.
  • Asparagus spears grow from a crown that is planted about a foot deep in sandy soils.
  • Under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10" in a 24-hour period.
  • Each crown will send spears up for about 6-7 weeks during the spring and early summer.
  • The outdoor temperature determines how much time will be between each picking...early in the season, there may be 4-5 days between pickings and as the days and nights get warmer, a particular field may have to be picked every 24 hours.
  • After harvesting is done the spears grow into ferns, which produce red berries and the food and nutrients necessary for a healthy and productive crop the next season.

  • An asparagus planting is usually not harvested for the first 3 years after the crowns are planted allowing the crown to develop a strong fibrous root system.
  • A well cared for asparagus planting will generally produce for about 15 years without being replanted.
  • The larger the diameter, the better the quality!
  • Asparagus is a nutrient-dense food which in high in Folic Acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin.
  • Asparagus has No Fat, contains No Cholesterol and is low in Sodium.

    The Jack Stack Barbecue Story
    Started by Russ Fiorella in Kansas City in 1957 and previously known as Smokestack BBQ, Jack Stack began as a traditional storefront barbecue restaurant with a modest selection of five to six items. Jack Fiorella, the eldest son, worked with his father until 1974, when he decided to branch off and start Fiorella’s Jack Stack of Martin City.
    To stand out in the competitive Kansas City barbecue scene of the mid 1970s, Jack and his wife, Delores, began cooking with Gourmet Hickory Wood and created the most extensive barbecue menu in the country.

    After tremendous success of its flagship location at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., Parisi Café has opened a second shop in Leawood, Kan. at Park Place. The new café features hand-brewed coffee by the cup, barista-prepared espresso drinks, iced coffees, artisan teas, Italian sodas and more – all made with Parisi’s locally-roasted coffee, sourced from around the world.

     The new café sells an array of pastries and baked items, plus grab-and-go sandwiches and salads. But the most anticipated new menu items are their limited offering of hand-crafted, cordial-style mixed drinks and wines selected to pair with a new dessert menu.

    “With the success of our first café, we knew we wanted to open a second. So, when we were approached by Park Place we decided it was the ideal spot to complement our coffee with even more menu items and expand the drink menu,” said Scott Presnell, director of marketing for Parisi Coffee.

    “With this larger space, we are able to focus on a wider variety of culinary selections as well as cocktail and wine options.”

    Parisi Café’s team consulted with Kansas City's own mixologist and nationally-recognized Master Sommelier Doug Frost to assist in creation of the cocktails as well as to select the wines served. Similar to how coffees are carefully selected for particular pairing or taste, it was important to ensure the drinks were aligned with the taste profiles of food they complement.

    Of course, the most popular items at the café will continue to be the signature hand-brewed coffee by the cup, espresso beverages with house-made syrups and Parisi's own Chai tea recipe. The café is also known for its new product line of popular artisan teas.

    “The Park Place location is near offices, retail, full-service restaurants, neighborhoods and apartments, a large movie theater and more. We thought it would be a great spot for those who might like to go out for dinner, see a show and then grab a coffee and dessert or even a nightcap,” Presnell said.

     Similar in interior design to the Union Station location, the new Parisi Café Leawood will also include outdoor sidewalk seating and covered seating in Park Places’ south breezeway, Park Place’s access from the south garage. Garage parking as well as limited street parking will be available.

     The new 2,000-square-foot café is located at 5245 W. 116th Place, across from Mestizo restaurant. Store hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. The café phone number is 913-696-9999.
