Evita is coming to Kansas City!

One of the theater's most famous and enduring plays is the musical story of Evita! It's a legendary tale of romance, politics, womanhood, the struggle for life and fame.

All this is captured by writer Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber in the story of Evita that's being performed by one of America's leading theatrical groups, The Kansas City Repertory Theater. The show dates are September 9th to October 2nd. Performances are nightly, Tuesday through Saturday, with two performances on Sundays.

We're delighted to let you know that Piropos Restaurant located in Briarcliff Village will also be at each performance offering for sale our famous Argentine empanadas before the show and during intermission. There'll be a typical Buenos Aires food cart just in front of the main Spencer Theatre entrance where Piropos will have a selection of Argentina's favorite "finger food". We hope you'll join us for great entertainment and music, a magnificent theater environment on the beautiful UMKC campus and a Taste of Argentina.

James Beard Foundation’s Taste America 2016 Kansas City Dinner

An Extravagant Experience for a Cause

Extravagance in taste I mean.  That would be the James Beard Foundation’s Taste America 2016 Kansas City Dinner.  I have been fortunate enough to attend a couple of these dinners, and believe me, they are remarkable evenings that even we mortals can attend.  But you should probably be a foodie, much maligned term though it is . . . or just someone who enjoys delicious meals expertly prepared by a stunning selection of chefs.

The event is Friday, September 30 and I’m telling you about it now cuz it’s always sold out.  It’s at Providence Restaurant in the Hilton President Hotel downtown and the line-up is spectacular.  Joining host chef Alejandro Diaz are James Beard winners Gavin Kaysen from Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis, Colby Garrelts from Bluestem, and nominee Nick Wesemann of The American fame.  And this year there is a tasting reception where you’ll taste specialties from Michael Corvino, Debbie Gold, Howard Hanna, Renee Kelly and Joe West.  Talk about an all-star event!

The reception and four course dinner’s proceeds partially go the scholarship fund of the James Beard Foundation which makes the evening even more remarkable. Local culinary students are invited to apply; the rest of us can should eat and drink and admire.  For more information and to purchase tickets, go to http://www.jbftasteamerica.org/event/kansas-city.  You’ll be thrilled you did.

Oyster Month JAX

March is oyster month at JaxFish House & Oyster Bar. Oysters are delicious, AND one of the most nutritionally well-balanced foods, containing protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats.

During Jax KC's first ever oyster month, we celebrate this amazing mollusk by partnering with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Greater Kansas City to raise funds and awareness for this valuable charitable organization.

Our most exciting event occurs at the end of the month when, on Sunday March 29 at 2:00pm we stage an oyster eating competition. Teams of four will square off against each other- and the clock- to determine the most proficient oyster eaters in KC.Entry fee for the competition is $400/team.  The winning team receives a $1,000 cash prize.

During the entire month, we also feature the "Dozen Dozens" promotion. Every time a Jax guest orders a dozen oysters, they will receive a raffle ticket. At month's end, the winner is drawn and will receive a punch card for 12 free dozen oysters to be enjoyed throughout the year.

The Let It Slide promotion is another fun opportunity for oyster fans to celebrate. Snap a pic of your best oyster-slurping shot and post to instagram. Use #jaxoystermonth and geo-tag your Jax location. Win a $100 gift card if your photo is the best.
