Bluestem

The James Beard Foundation names Chef Colby Garrelts of Bluestem one of five nominees for the “Best Chef Midwest”! On Monday March 22nd, 2010 the James Beard Foundation announced that Colby Garrelts, chef and owner of bluestem (900 Westport Rd. Kansas City, MO 64111), is one of five finalist nominees for the James Beard Award for “Best Chef Midwest.” Chef Garrelts is the only nominee in this category from Kansas City. He is joined by four other chef nominees from Minneapolis, MN and St. Louis, MO. The Awards Gala will be held on Monday May 3rd 2010 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center; Columbus Avenue & 65th Street NYC. The awards ceremony is a black tie event beginning at 6pm with a Gala Reception immediately following. This year’s theme for the James Beard Foundation’s Awards Gala is The Legacy Continues. The Drop

The Drop recently started serving a new menu exclusive to the bar, with $4 and $8 plates that are making the stools a hot commodity. The plates are small from one bite or two. The $8 are bigger and could be a meal or light bite if you are sharing. More information about The Drop

The Origins of Kansas City BBQ

Kansas City's barbecue cuisine began as early as the 1920's, resulting from a melting pot of sauces and traditions brought to this area from Texas and the Deep south. While Bryant's is perhaps the most famous barbecue establishment, the actual barbecue phenomenon began with a man named Henry Perry. During the Depression, Perry distributed slabs of barbecued ribs grilled in an outdoor pit and wrapped in newspaper to make ends meet. Customers were satisfied, and the trend caught on, influencing upcoming barbecue chefs such as Charlie and Arthur Bryant, George Gates, and Otis Boyd. Love

Dan and I were looking forward to our romantic Valentines' dinner at Pierponts. But it was sooo much more than I expected!! The wine pairing enhanced each dish more than I could have ever imagined! And as if that wasn't enough, Dan got down on one knee and purposed to me afterwards!!! It was not only a fantastic cullinary experience, but an evening I will never forget!!!!
