bluestem Celebrates Charlie Trotter Day!

Charlie TrotterOn Saturday, August 16, bluestem will salute chef Charlie Trotter with a five-course tasting menu inspired by recipes from all of his cookbooks that chefs Megan and Colby have collected. A portion of the proceeds from this tasting menu that evening will benefit The Trotter Project. Megan and Colby have a personal tie to Charlie Trotter and his namesake restaurant. At the beginning of his career, Colby went to Chicago to stage for the world famous chef in hopes of acquiring a more permanent position. Instead, he met his future wife and they began their lives - and success - together. After getting married, Colby and Megan wanted their first dinner as a married couple to be at Charlie Trotter's restaurant. Chef Trotter was gracious enough to come meet them and gave them a tour of the space and kitchen. Since all those years ago, he's been a drive and influence on Colby and Megan's culinary endeavors. Presented by Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City, comedy show to benefit

Gilda's Club Kansas City Aug. 23

Tickets are on sale now for Gilda’s Club Kansas City’s annual comedy fundraiser, Giggle with Gilda.  Presented by Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City, the comedy-improv benefit featuring nationally recognized comedians and Whose Line Is It Anyway? stars Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood will be Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City.

Additional sponsors of Giggle With Gilda 2014 include American Century Investments and Lathrop and Gage.

The "two man group," Mochrie and Sherwood, have emerged as two of America’s most popular comedic personalities. The most recent concert DVD released by the Emmy-nominated Whose Line Is It Anyway? stars is the culmination of seven successful years of touring theaters, colleges and corporate events across the country. Using their razor-sharp wit and amazing improv skills, the duo takes contributions from the audience to create hilarious and original scenes. An extraordinary evening of improvisational comedy, the show becomes truly interactive as audience members are called to the stage to participate in the fun.
In addition to the comedy-improv, the show will feature the gifted Kansas City entertainer, Missy Koonce, as emcee and legendary Kansas City musician Lonnie McFadden will perform with his band, trumpet and signature tap dancing.  Kansas City magician Todd Lamanske will provide pre-show entertainment as guests arrive.
The extraordinary evening of entertainment will benefit Gilda’s Club, a Kansas City cancer support community offering support groups, educational opportunities, social events and workshops in a home-like setting.

“With more than 60,000 people in the metro area living with cancer, there is a tremendous need for the Gilda's Club program in Kansas City,” said Penni Johnson, president of Gilda’s Club Kansas City Board of Directors. “This event is such a great way to connect with residents of Kansas City who are living with cancer and their family and friends. When people laugh more, they worry less, and that is a very encouraging thing for the tough times that our members are experiencing or have experienced.”
Tickets are on sale now for $60 and $45. A limited number of $200 VIP tickets are available and include access to the private after-party with special guests, Mochrie and Sherwood. (A portion of the VIP After-Party ticket is tax-deductible. Service and facility fees may apply.) Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. All ticket levels may be purchased through
All proceeds from Giggle with Gilda will benefit Gilda’s Club Kansas City, which is an affiliate of The Cancer Support Community. In 2012 Gilda’s Club KC officially opened its doors to become the 55 North American affiliate with the mission of ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Located at 21 W. 43rd Street in Kansas City, Mo., just northeast of the Country Club Plaza, Gilda’s Club offers social and emotional support to all people — men, women, teens, and children — living with ANY cancer, along with their families and friends, as a critical complement to their medical care. The program is always offered free of charge and the core components include support, education, healthy lifestyles, social connections, resources and referral.

Bluestem gets a brand new look

Bluestem,  one of Kansas City’s premiere dining destinations, has reopened last week with a brand new look.  After a brief close for renovation, space in the sleek new kitchen was reconfigured so that diners can watch their food as it is plated in the open kitchen area. The pastry kitchen, located at the back of the lounge, is also an open layout, inviting glimpses of the expert chefs creating bluestem’s decadent desserts.

JJ's Restaurant will re-open this year in the Polsinelli Building on the West Plaza.

JJ’s restaurant plans to reopen in late summer in the new Plaza Vista building, 18-months after the original restaurant was demolished in a fiery explosion that killed one worker and injured others.

Jimmy Frantzes considered rebuilding on the original JJ’s site but it was too expensive. "It is ironic to start over in the Plaza Vista site", Jimmy said. The new restaurant is going to have a prominent location with a large outdoor patio overlooking Roanoke, and the complex offered abundant parking.

As for the original JJ’s site, a corner yellow brick facade and front entryway tile are nearly all that remain. The Frantze brothers haven’t decided what they will do with the property.
