PARISI CAFÉ SERVES FREE COFFEE IN HONOR OF NATIONAL COFFEE DAY

Kansas Citians are invited to recharge… for free in celebration of National Coffee Day. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, September 28 Parisi Café at Kansas City’s Union Station is offering a free cup of coffee in celebration of an annual coffee holiday. For those seeking a specialty item in honor of National Coffee Day (which is officially Saturday, September 29) Parisi Café is offering $1 off all barista-prepared medium/large coffee and espresso-based drinks all day. No coupon necessary, however guests must mention National Coffee Day to receive the discount.   The local artisan coffee roaster opened its first café inside Union Station’s Grand Hall one year ago. For the past six years, the company has sold 100-percent Arabica bean, drum-roasted coffee in local grocery stores, as well as custom blends for a number of well-known area restaurants. KC Healthy Kids Part of Mid America Emmy Nomination

A segment of Kansas City Public Television’s Imagine KC series featuring interviews with Gretchen Kunkel of KC Healthy Kids and Beth Low of Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition and a feature on the Grown in Ivanhoe project, has been nominated for a Mid-America Emmy Award. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid America Regional Chapter Emmy awards ceremony will be held at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, Mo. Sat., Sept. 22.  In all, KCPT earned nine nominations, including this Public/Current/Community Affairs – Program/Special nomination.   Titled Building Healthy, Local Food Systems, the nominated episode is part of the 12-part Imagine KC series, co-produced by KCPT and the Mid America Regional Council, to raise awareness of strategies to promote a vibrant, connected, and green future for Kansas City. Oktoberfest! 2012

Starting on Saturday 28, the world will get a little bit crazier: it's the beginning of Oktoberfest! 3rd annual Grünauer Oktoberfest Kansas City's home for authentic Austrian cuisine, will, according to owner Nicholas Grünauer, host an "expanded and extended version of last year's" Oktoberfest. This year's event, sponsored by Hofbräu, will take place Friday September 28th & 29th and will feature food, beer and a variety of live entertainment in two large tents in front of the Freighthouse restaurant. Eat Local For The Holidays Preview

The Eat Local For The Holidays campaign is an effort by the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition to encourage people to choose at least one item in their holiday meal from a local source. This year’s theme is Deliciously Simple . Reasons for eating local food include keeping your food dollars in the local economy, reducing your carbon footprint, increasing the freshness of the foods people eat and because local foods taste great. The campaign includes an opportunity to pledge to serve at least one locally-grown food in holiday celebrations.  The website www.eatlocalkc.net includes a sign-up for the pledge, reasons why it is important to eat local, what food is fresh in Kansas and Missouri right now, a list of farmer’s markets open during this time of year, restaurants serving local food, local food recipes and how to get involved in creating a healthy local food system. Master Italian chef, Jasper Mirabile Jr. has declared the month of September "National Cannoli Month."    By decree of the master cannoli maker, Jasper Mirabile Jr, desert lovers in Kansas City will be able to enjoy a massive show of cannoli power during September! "I'm obsessed with finding the perfect cannoli!" says Jasper. I even invented a Cannoli Therapy Patch for people who need a cannoli fix. I dressed up last year as a cannoli for Halloween. The end-story in my cookbook is, "On the Cannoli Trail"...it's all about my search for the greatest cannoli in Sicily!    Cannolis originated in Palermo & the surrounding areas.
