Eat Local

.— If you’re not traveling for the holidays, why should your food? The Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition is once again challenging the community to Eat Local for the Holidays. The Food Policy Coalition is encouraging people to pledge online to have at least one local food item as part of a holiday meal. It could be the sweet potatoes, or the pecans in the pecan pie, or even the turkey itself. Many items used in a traditional holiday meal are raised locally and are becoming easier to find as the local food movement grows. “We are fortunate have a vibrant agricultural community here in Kansas City,” said Beth Low, director of the Food Policy Coalition. “More small and medium-sized farms growing produce and livestock naturally and organically are popping up every season, as are outlets for those farmers to sell their food to consumers. It’s easier today to purchase local food in Kansas City than it has been for a long time.” According to Low, buying local food is good for the econ...

The "gastronomic Meal of the French" has just been registered to the intangible heritage of the Humanity by the experts of U.N. The adults love, the children are bored often in front of the unending parade of plates: appetizers, entree, cheese, dessert, liqueur... Today a French art distinguished as heritage of humanity. This tradition to muster itself around a meal would date back to the XVIIe century. What it is a matter of the dinner daily, sometimes of the lunch in the countries, of the meal sunday or of the one linked to the events religious or other festive or not as a marriage or a death. It is therefore the meal linked to the French cultural identity that is put forward, in all its composing including the art of the table, the quality of food and this community notion linked to the gastronomy. Eat local for the Holidays

Support your area farmers and “Eat local for the Holidays!” Why choose food that has traveled hundreds or thousands of miles before it reaches your table when you can get fresh selections right here in your own town? A local group, the Kansas City Food Policy Coalition is helping to raise awareness regarding all of the tasty selections that are available here and where you can purchase them. They are asking that Kansas Citians pledge to have at least one local food item as part of a holiday meal. Those who take the pledge will be entered into a drawing to win local food prizes. Go to www.eatlocalkc.net to register your pledge. According to this group, fresh foods are generally more nutrient rich, have more flavor and use fewer if any chemical preservatives. Choosing locally grown is good for you, the environment and the economy!

Diners love local and hate texting

A new Zagat survey tracks American dining out trends and behaviors New Orleans diners tip the best, Hawaiians the worst, diners think that texting at the table is rude and that food should be locally sourced, organic or sustainably raised. Those were among the findings of Zagat's survey of 153,000 diners as it compiled its 2011 America’s Top Restaurants guide, which was released Wednesday. Sixty-eight percent of participants in the survey said they thought it was important for the food they eat to be locally sourced, organic or sustainably raised, and 60 percent said they would even pay more for such food. Nearly a third, 31 percent, said they sought out restaurants specializing in such “green” cuisine. Most diners — 85 percent — said it was fine to take pictures of food and each other at restaurants, but 63 percent said texting, tweeting and talking on cell phones was rude and inappropriate. Diners are eating out a little less than before the recession — 3.1 times per week, compar...

Technomic finds dessert more popular than ever

Image
It is no secret that the foodservice industry has suffered recently through a bleak economy; but the silver lining of the cloud could actually turn out to be icing. Technomic’s newest study finds that for the past three years, more consumers have consistently eaten more dessert. Occupying the smallest portion of most restaurant menus, dessert presents a strong growth opportunity for operators looking to increase sales. “Dessert is unique, because it not only involves sensory appeal, but also sparks strong emotional drivers,” says Technomic EVP Darren Tristano. “If someone wants to reward themselves after a bad day, they might splurge on a dessert to feel better; but if they want to celebrate after a good day, they might do the same thing. Motivations for craving dessert run the gamut." Tristano added that only 1 percent of Technomic's survey respondents said they did not eat dessert, and 70 percent eat dessert at least once a week. What Restaurant's Dessert do you enjoy?

Growing Market

According to Iremam (the French Institute of Research on Arab and Muslim civilisations) there are over 5 million Muslims in France and the halal market is four times more valuable than the market for organic food. Etude Solis, a market research firm specialised in ethnic marketing, are more modest in their estimations stating that it is at least twice the size of the organic market and are forecasting that by the end of 2010 it will be worth €4.5 billion, of which €1 billion will be spent in foodservice. With eight million Muslims in the US, and the average family in the country spending around $2100 on food yearly, Chaudry estimates the US Halal market to be worth $16bn. Quick, McDonald’s key competitor in France, announced that their sales in the eight outlets running a halal trial since November 2009 have doubled to date. Carrefour Malaysia becomes the first hypermarket to offer full halal products within the three main sections of the supermarket chain. The halal industry was a hig...

Starbucks To Offer Beer and Wine

Image
From One Addiction to the Next: Starbucks To Offer Beer and Wine By: Megan Gibson (21 hours ago) Topics: alcohol, beer, business, franchise, Seattle, starbucks, wine Starbucks patrons could soon be riding an entirely new kind of buzz. In an effort to attract more evening customers--reportedly, Starbucks gets 70% of its business before 2 p.m.--the coffee franchise is looking to offer regional beers and wines. A location in Seattle is the first to offer alcohol in its newly revamped store. Kris Engskov, a region vice president for Starbucks, said, "What we've done is we've tried to create a variety of options that you might find in more of a restaurant at night." (Check out TIME's Q&A with Starbucks founder, Howard Schultz.) If the Seattle location does well, it likely will only be a matter of time before other locations start offering beer and wine, as well as a wider variety of food. And don't worry about feeling out of place in a traditional Starbucks wit...

Revocup

More than 1,000 years ago, a goatherd in Ethiopia' south-western highlands plucked a few red berries from some young green trees growing there in the forest and tasted them. He liked the flavour and the feel-good effect that followed. Today those self-same berries, dried, roasted and ground, have become the world's second most popular non-alcoholic beverage after tea. And, as David Beatty discovers in words and pictures, the Ethiopian province where they first blossomed "Kaffa " gave its name to coffee. Ethiopians have harvested and enjoyed coffee for many centuries. Their love for coffee leads them to develop strict coffee preparation rules. Over time, this practice becomes a daily ritual in contemporary life. The coffee preparation and ceremonies are a unique cultural heritage of Ethiopian society that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. To find and appreciate a good expresso or coffee, Revocup is providing you some of the best coffee in Town! 11030 Quivira R...

Nara

I heard of Nara from a friend and he told me they had a awesome happy hour, so we went there for an early dinner and had a few drinks and sushi it was great the service was good, and the atmosphere was really cool, i felt like i was in LA or NY, very hip and upbeat. The sushi was good and for how cheap it is during happy hr there is no other place in KC that can beat it. I have heard that the Saturday nights DJ and lounge club is really chill and fun, but have not gone Saturday nights.I would recommend it to anyone who like good sushi for a good price Jason

Thai Place

I go to Thai Place that is downtown at least once a month. They have the best thai food in the city, if not the country. I was sad to hear that the one downtown is no longer open. I love their food so much that I now go all the way to Overland Park to get it. I have tried thai restaurants in Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Miami, Baltimore, and San Francisco and none compare to Thai Place in KC. That is a tough statement, but I am saying it. Brazil Market

The only Brazilian store in the metro to my knowledge at the moment. The people are really talkative and nice. I went in search of a specific Brazilian coffee (Cafe Iguacu). The meat shop in the back sells imported beef from an Australian farm that is ran by Brazilians. According to the owner, it's the beef that most closely resembles what Brazilians consume back home. The Quality of the meat is apparently so great, that Fogo De Chao and a few other Brazilian steakhouses n the metro are now ordering their cuts of meat through this market. As far as other products, I did notice things such as guava paste, guaranca soda, Acai berry juice, and a few other things. More informations Kevin

Chez Elle

I begged my husband to take me to Chez Elle since it had been forever since I had a crepe. He hmm'ed and hawed, saying "fine, but I'm stopping somewhere else for lunch afterwards." We got a meatball crepe (on special that day), a pollo verde and my toddler got a cheese and chicken crepe. We all wolfed everything down. My husband was pleasantly surprised and said we could return anytime I wanted to LOL! The following week, I took my girlfriend here. I had the Legume and she had a breakfast crepe. We shared the cherries dessert crepe. DELISH! The only gripe is that the coffee is expensive and just okay. We will definitely be back! More informations

Kansas City fans

Kansas City fans who support soccer teams from other lands are excited for World Cup to begin Neighbors had reported a disturbance. A raucous party was indeed in full swing — and with good reason. Argentina was playing in the World Cup. Because the game was in Japan, kickoff locally was 2 a.m., but that didn’t deter the Rodriguez family from playing host to a gathering of nearly 50 people. “Argentina scored and everybody went nuts, and then the cops showed up,” said Nahuel Rodriguez, a son of Eduardo and Silvia. “We had to tell them we’re watching a game, we’re not doing anything weird. We got complaints, but we didn’t care.” That’s the power of the World Cup, which is held every four years. In 32 days, the craziness begins anew. Fans from across the globe will descend on South Africa, while more than a billion people are expected to watch at least some of the tournament on TV. Cities in Europe have been known to shut down — stores close, public transportation ceases — when the nationa...

Dinner and Movie

Image
"Big Night" is a 1996 flick about a failing Italian restaurant run by two brothers. To save the business, the brothers decide to put all of their efforts into one last big meal, inviting all their friends -- as well as the press. A big part of the movie is spent making Timpano, the celebrated main course of the big night – and the star of Pachamama’s three-course menu to be served before a screening of the film. The meal starts with an amuse-bouche of arancini, small fried rice balls coated with breadcrumbs. The amuse-bouche is followed by a baby omelet topped with taleggio cheese, candied walnuts, and a Chianti vinaigrette. The Timpano serves as the main course. Dessert is tiramisu. This Dinner & a Movie night has a great new addition: after dinner and just before the film, Chuck Berg, beloved KU professor of film and media studies, will give a short introduction to the movie. We're lucky to have him -- thank you, Professor Berg! This whole "Big Night" plus...

Pierpont's

I've been going to Pierponts for the better part of 10 years and they do not disappoint!!! The service is consistantly impressive, with a knowledgeable and polite staff. The atmosphere is incredible, with the restaurant set back in the remodeled Union Station, it gives any meal an upscale feel. The food is amazing! Although the menu is always evolving, Pierponts never disappoints and keeps some of their best as staples to choose from. The calamari is by far my favorite from any I've ever had. Four stars all around, every time. Shevaun
